1943 - 2017

Darlene Ann Drews, 73, of Waupun, died Saturday, July 29, 2017 in the town of Friendship.

Dar was born on September 25, 1943 at her home in Randolph, WI, the daughter of Martin and Olive (Henke) Drews. Dar was the first to complete college (Wisconsin State College Oshkosh) in her family and spent 35 years teaching 1st graders in the Rosendale-Brandon School District. She loved her job and helped hundreds of children learn to read. She still volunteered at the elementary school in Rosendale, working with her “kids” this past spring. Dar traveled extensively, as far as New Zealand where she taught for a semester. Dar also taught a semester in Cork, Ireland. She made several trips to Costa Rica. Of course, she visited all 50 states in the U.S. During retirement, she volunteered at Marsh Haven Nature Center where she guided walks on the Horicon Marsh. She used her master gardening skills to help create gardens at Harris Park in Waupun. Dar was a very active member in her community and her church. She loved spending time with her family and they loved spending time with her. Dar lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute of it. She will be missed.

Darlene is survived by her sisters: Elaine Beer of Wake Forest, NC, and Kathleen Drews (Keven Mularkey) of Pound, WI; four nieces; three nephews; four great-nieces; three great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; and many relatives and friends.

My sincere sympathy to all of Darlene’s family and friends. Darlene enjoyed every minute of life. I will hear her laugh and see her broad smile whenever I think of her. I will tell my siblings and sons of her passing. Darlene and my late husband Sid will have a lot to catch up on. I can hear them now laughing and telling jokes!

Darlene was such a beautiful soul. I had the honor of working with her years ago with the Waupun Area Garden Club. She planted many seeds in our community and they always seemed to blossom from her compassionate care. ??

My thoughts are with her friends and family. As a 1st grade student of hers in 1971 in the “old” Rosendale school she was patient and kind to all her students. I happened to bump into her years later and recognized her by her beautiful laugh. Thank you for touching my life!

Darlene’s smile was infectious. A wonderful addition to the Fond du Lac County Master Gardener Association. She did a Peony Garden tour for several of us, where she had to stop several times to get hugs from former students. She called her ‘kids’.

As a 1st grade student of hers back in 1990 I will always remember how much I loved having her as my teacher. I got to talk to her at the Lions chicken BBQ over the years and I still have wonderful memories of her. She was also a family friend. She was a truly beautiful soul and I am so saddened by her passing. Sending my thoughts and prayers.

  11. Darlene gave of herself every day in every way….and always with a smile. Wishing her family peace at this difficult time.
