Obituary

Alfred Tillema, age 88, of Beaver Dam, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025.

A memorial gathering for Al will take place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd., Beaver Dam, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Luke Baehr officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Randolph Cemetery.

Al was born on September 24, 1937 in Friesland, WI, the son of Albert and Dorothy Sytsma Tillema. He graduated from Cambria High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Army, demonstrating his commitment to his country. Al married the love of his life, Winifred "Wink" Tillema, on November 11, 1960. Together, they raised a family in Randolph, where they created many cherished memories. He will be known for his strong faith and work ethic.

Al was the owner of Beaver Blacksmith and Al-Win Enterprises. Upon retiring in 1988, Al and Wink embarked on mission trips to Africa, Nicaragua, and Ethiopia, bringing support and compassion to those in need around the globe. Al's hobbies included using a sawmill for drying and planing wood, which reflected his love for craftsmanship and nature. He was also an avid gardener. His spirit of giving extended beyond his personal pursuits, as he dedicated time to volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul, embodying a legacy of charity and community service.

Al is survived by his loving spouse, Winifred "Wink" Tillema; children: Dale Tillema and Beth (Mark) Benton; his five grandchildren: Alyse (Adam) Giacolone, Whitney (Jacob) Rataczak, Jared (Jordan) Holwerda, Chad Holwerda (Jillian Vande Zande), and Christopher Shattuck; six great-grandchildren: Autumn, Asher, Ryker, Alarik, Silas, and Wylder; his brother, Gerald Tillema, along with nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Dorothy Tillema; in-laws, Peter and Gertrude Dykstra; daughter, Amy Marie; brothers: Donald (Barbara) Tillema and Arnold (Mary) Tillema; sister-in-law, Sharon Tillema; and son-in-law, John Shattuck.

The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Hillside Hospice, especially to Moria, Val, Deb, and Dr. Cleary, for the wonderful care provided to Alfred in his final days. Thank you to the "Garden Guys" and the fellow St. Vincent volunteers, especially Dale who made his last years a happy time. The family encourages others to engage in volunteer work at St. Vincent de Paul in honor of Alfred's enduring legacy of compassion and service.
