Anthony M. Goetz, age 85, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam after a long illness.
Anthony Michael was born on April 23, 1927 in Milwaukee, the oldest son of Anthony D. and Irene (nee Buege) Goetz. He attended Catholic elementary schools in Milwaukee and high school in West Allis, WI. He served in the Patton's 3rd U.S. Army, attached to the Munich Area Engineers in the American Zone of Occupied Germany from June 1945 to October 1946. While there, he designed the official badge that all 22 members of the group wore on their uniforms. Upon his discharge, he returned to Brookfield, WI by his family to assist managing the Mom 'n Pop grocery store his father owned.
Anthony married Dolores Ehr on November 8, 1955 in Mukwonago, WI; in 1957 they purchased the Brookfield store from his father. Later, they and their four children moved to Beaver Dam in 1963 and continued to operate an independent grocery store on Beaver St. until 1968. Anthony then became a pressman at Perry Printing in Waterloo, WI and worked there until he retired in 1991.
Anthony was the great-great-grandson of Roman Goetz, the German immigrant carpenter who began the shrine at Holy Hill; the hand-carved cross still remains in the lobby of the main church. Anthony had a life-long love of trains, beginning in his earliest years as a young child in Milwaukee.
Anthony is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores of Beaver Dam; two daughters, Lynn (Karl) Thulin of Warner, NH and Deborah Goetz of Goffstown, NH; three sons, Michael (Bonnie) Goetz, of Beaver Dam, Paul (Cheryl) Goetz of Beaver Dam and David (Diane Hotham) Goetz of Amberg, WI; two grandchildren, Christopher (Vanessa) Thulin of Warner, NH and Jennifer Thulin of Concord, NH; sister, Patricia Goetz Johnson Lurvey of Milwaukee, WI; brother, James (Cheryl) Goetz of Spring Hill, TN; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Margery) Ehr of Savage, MN, Shirley Mouras of Mt. Gilead, OH, William Alan (Rev. Diane) Ehr of Burnsville, MN, Joan Tucker of Mohave Valley, AZ and Gregory (Terry) Ehr of Ridgefield, CT. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his infant brother, Kenneth, in 1932; his mother, Irene, in 1935; his father, Anthony D., in 1979; his step-mothers, Lenore Kennedy and Caroline Mergenthaler; his mother and father-in-law, Leo and Anna Ehr; and brothers-in-law, Robert Johnson, Roger Lurvey, Gary (Barbara) Ehr, Louis Mouras and Loren Tucker.
In keeping with Anthony's wishes, a private service for Anthony will be held. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in the Town of Beaver Dam.
