Avis E. Cornwell, age 90 of Markesan, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Markesan Resident Home.

Visitation for Avis will take place on Monday, October 24, 2022 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 65 W. Catherine St., Markesan, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jason Jobs officiating. Burial will follow at Markesan Memorial Cemetery.

Avis was born on March 28, 1932, the daughter of Herman C. and Emma M. (Dretske) Laper. She was a 1950 graduate of Markesan High School. On April 3, 1954, she was united in marriage to her husband, Vernon A. Cornwell at St. John's Lutheran Church in Markesan. Right out of high school, on July 5, 1950, Avis started working for the Markesan Herald, staying there even after it was purchased by the Beaver Dam Daily Citizen and later by Capital Newspapers in Madison. She retired from Capital Newspapers on September 25, 2008 after 58 years in the newspaper business. She also worked at Slate Law Office in Markesan.

Avis is survived by her daughter, Sandra McCulley of Markesan; grandchildren, Rebecca (Dan) Bush and Jacob McCulley; great-granddaughter, Leah Bush; sister, June Zuhlke; and further survived by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon on March 3, 2022; infant son, James Alan Cornwell; brothers, Herbert (Delores) Laper, Irwin (Nancy) Laper, Robert (Karen) Laper; half-sister, Florence (Walter) Roesler; half-brothers, Wil (Pat) Ramey and Clarence Laper; brother-in-law, Loren Zulhke Sr., and other relatives.
