Berl Thompson

Nov 1, 1933 — Jun 22, 2026

Berl Thompson, age 92, of rural Waupun, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2026.

He was born on November 1, 1933, to Clarence and Florence (Roeske) Thompson. He graduated from Milwaukee Boys Tech before proudly serving his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, including time stationed in Japan.

After returning home from military service, Berl began his career at Cuneo Press in Milwaukee. When the company relocated out of state, he chose a new path in public service and became a correctional officer. In 1963, Berl and his family moved to Waupun, where he continued his career in corrections, dedicating 26 years of service before retiring in 1989.

On August 17, 1957, Berl married the love of his life, Jeanette Molnar, in Milwaukee. Together they built a life filled with faith, family, and unwavering devotion to one another. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment and love that spanned nearly 69 years.

Following retirement, Berl fulfilled a lifelong dream by building a cabin on a lake in Phillips, Wisconsin. The cabin became a cherished gathering place where generations of family members created lasting memories together. Nothing brought Berl greater joy than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved teaching his grandchildren to swim, taking them to the library, sharing stories, and being an active part of their lives.

Berl was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need. He loved working outdoors and caring for his properties. Whether lending a hand to a neighbor, supporting a friend, or spending time with family, Berl lived a life marked by quiet strength, humility, and compassion.

He was a proud member of American Legion Post 210 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served on the Honor Guard for many years. He was also a faithful member of Hillside Assembly Church.

Berl is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Jeanette Thompson; his children, Brad (Linda) Thompson, Sherri Thompson, and Dusty (Brenda) Thompson; his grandchildren, Christopher (Carisa) Thompson, Rebecca Thompson, Jeanette (Johannes) Ostrander, John Ostrander, Ben Ostrander, Nicholas (Gloria) Thompson, Nichole Thompson, Kori (Cheyanne) Thompson, Regina Fauske, Tawnii (Ross) Thompson, Veda Valek, and Greg Valek; 10 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; a sister, Nona Thompson-Zanca; brothers- and sisters-in-law, John Molnar and Dorothy (Len) Bulkow; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Jeremy Thompson; his granddaughter, Natascia; his brothers, Tyrus and Tris Thompson; and other loved ones who welcomed him home.
