Dale was born on September 18, 1953 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Beaver Dam to Jerome and Monita (nee Bortz) Hupf. He was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fox Lake and later attended St. Peter's Catholic School in Beaver Dam, where he was in the marching band. Dale graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1971. He was inducted into the Navy through the Milwaukee Brewer Training Command and was proud to be sworn in at home plate before a Brewers game. On September 1, 1990, Dale was united in marriage to Dianne Arthurs in Beaver Dam. They honeymooned to Hawaii and that would be the first of many trips, including Cancun, Niagara Falls and Glacier National Park.
