Darrell Cotterill, age 89 of Markesan, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Visitation for Darrell will take place on Monday, August 19, 2024 at Markesan United Methodist Church, 74 E. Catherine St., Markesan from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also take place on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Markesan United Methodist Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Joseph Christopher officiating. Burial will follow at Mackford Union Cemetery.
Darrell was born in Markesan on October 6, 1934, the son of Jess and Ruby (Lemke) Cotterill. He attended Evergreen Grove School through 8th grade and Markesan High School, graduating with the Class of 1952. He was united in marriage to his wife, Joyce Braun on October 12, 1956. She passed away on January 23, 1997. He was member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church of Markesan before joining Markesan United Methodist Church, where he served on multiple church committees. On December 6, 1997, he was united in marriage to his wife, Nancy Greget. Darrell started out farming with his dad and brother, and later lived and farmed in Kingston, before buying the farm from his aunt, Blanche Dillie in Mackford. In March of 2000, he switched from dairy farming with Dale and John to raising Holstein beef. On December 31, 2012, he sold the farm to Badger Mining Corporation and continued to farm for 3 more years, officially retiring on September 11, 2015. Darrell's favorite pastimes were deer hunting, reading joke books, watching the Packers and Brewers, and working on his paint-by-numbers, which were highlighted in Agri-View, Country Today, and Markesan Regional. He loved playing cards and was the last original member of the Sheepshead club that began in January of 1997. He also enjoyed traveling, from visiting the Manawa Rodeo, taking car trips to Branson, MO a few times a year to taking part in many bus trips.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Nancy Cotterill; sons, Dennis (Izzy Eckert) Cotterill and John Cotterill, both of Markesan; daughter, Judy (Kevin) Cushman of Wis Rapids; stepson, Joseph (Misty Galli) Greget of Medford; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Roger (Peggy) Cotterill of Markesan; his beloved cats, Thomas Gene (aka Tommy) and Goldie; and further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Joyce; son, Dale Cotterill; grandson, Collin Cushman; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Cotterill; and other relatives.

As Darrell would always say, his famous last words: "I don't know."
