Darwin Lester Berndt, age 75, of Waupun, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024 after a battle with cancer.
Darwin was born in Waupun on April 21, 1949, the son of Lester and Ruth (Kirchoff) Berndt. He attended Waupun High School and graduated in 1967. Darwin farmed on the family acres which was his passion. Due to economic reasons he gave up farming and after a few trial jobs he accepted a position at National Rivet Manufacturing Co. where he worked until retirement. On March 24, 1973 he was united in marriage to Susan McCullough at North Burnett Immanuel Lutheran Church. Throughout the years he enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially roaming the family acres and cutting wood for hours. He enjoyed traveling and meeting new friends. Darwin loved driving semi for the fall harvest for his special friend, Howard Williams. He was a member of North Burnett Immanuel Lutheran Church and later joined as a member at Pella Lutheran Church.
Darwin is survived by his wife, Susan Berndt, a daughter, Becky (Greg) Happell of Winneconne; three grandchildren: Jonathan Duer of Waupun, Kimberly Duer, and Tabitha Sass of Menasha; four great-grandchildren: Wyatt Sass, Leon Hage, Leanna Due, and Caroline Duer; a sister, Louise Zamzow of Ripon; two brothers-in-law, Joe (Sue) McCullough and Leslie (Mary) McCullough; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many special friends.
Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Paul Zamzow.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 9-11 a.m. at Pella Lutheran Church 315 S. Madison St. Waupun WI. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pella Lutheran Church in Waupun with Rev. David Knuth officiating. Burial will follow at North Burnett Union Cemetery on Highway 26 near Burnett, WI.
