David Wentworth Berg, age 81 of Beaver Dam, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Dave was born on October 6, 1944, the son of Wentworth and Amy (Larson) Berg. He was a 1963 graduate of Beaver Dam High School.
Dave "Bugzy" Berg married his high school sweetheart, Judith Schweiger, on August 5, 1967 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaver Dam. Together they raised one daughter, Lisa Nan.
Dave was a decorated athlete at Beaver Dam High School, excelling in football, basketball, and track. In 1962, he scored five rushing touchdowns in a single game, a school record that stood for 59 years. Following high school, he played cornerback for Milt Bruhn at the University of Wisconsin and later at the University of Tampa. In recognition of his athletic accomplishments, Dave was inducted into the Beaver Dam Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
After college, Dave proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves. He was extremely proud that he completed his basic training at Fort Campbell in Kentucky.
A devoted supporter of youth athletics, Dave spent many years as a baseball umpire and was recognized as Umpire of the Year in 1991 for his dedication and contributions to the sport. His deep involvement in Beaver Dam's baseball and softball programs earned him the respect of players, coaches, and fellow league officials.
When he wasn't on a basketball court officiating or behind home plate on a baseball field, Dave could often be found on the golf course. Competition was deep seated in his blood. Dave played in 37 Charlie Brown Open Tournaments, winning the championship in 1976, 1979, and 1982, and won the Senior Championship (over 50) in 1998, 2006, and 2007. He especially looked forward to spending a week each summer golfing with Lisa while helping her improve her game.
Dave retired from John Deere in Horicon after 30 years of service. His work ethic was strong, and he was always proud of the John Deere brand.
Dave is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy; his daughter, Lisa (Craig) Treichel of Ashwaubenon; and his greatest joy: his two grandsons, Brett David and Brock Allen Treichel. His beloved granddogs, Chloe and Ellie, also held a special place in his heart.
He is further survived by his sisters, Peggy Aaroen and Cathy (Larry) Vick; his brother, John Berg; his sister-in-law, Nancy Berg; and many nieces and nephews, including Doug (Pam) Knapp, David (Sharlene) Knapp, Jeff (Jena) Berg, Michelle (Mark) Wendt, Jessica (John) Rentmeester, Amy (Tim) Mohr, Jody Berg, and Michael, Amanda, and Jason Berg-Bintzler.
He was greeted in heaven by his parents; one brother, Steve Berg; and brother-in-law, Vern Aaroen.
A memorial gathering for Dave will take place on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services in Beaver Dam from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1:00 p.m.
