David Smit

September 18, 1947 — June 10, 2026

David Smit, age 78 of Waupun, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, after a period of health complications.

David was born on September 18, 1947, the son of Delmar and Lorraine (Luther) Smit. He attended Waupun High School. David purchased the feed mill in Friesland and later worked for 25 years at Purina Mills in Fond du Lac, retiring in 2014 after 25 years. On February 14, 1992, he married the love of his life, Paulette Gudenschwager, at Pella Lutheran Church in Waupun. David enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice fishing, four-wheeling, camping, and, most of all, spending time with his family.

David is survived by his wife of 33 years, Paulette; his sons, Derrick (Candace) Smit and Jeffrey Smit; his stepchildren, Chris Selje, Rebecca (Scott) Kamphuis, and Angela (Josh) Herringa; three grandchildren, Bailey (Paige) Smit, Kobe (fiancée, Avery Poole) and Kennedy Smit; ten step-grandchildren; one great-grandson, Baker Smit; two step-great-grandchildren; his sister, Barb (Harland) Harmsen; his brother-in-law, David (Debbie) Gudenschwager; and further survived by several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial gathering for David will take place at Werner Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun on Friday, June 19, 2026 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor David Knuth officiating.
