Obituary
Don "Grizzly" R. Smith, age 91 of Beaver Dam, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at his home, surrounded by family.
Don was born on June 15, 1921 in Baraboo, WI to Martin and Pearl (nee Whitmore) Smith. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School and later served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Upon returning from the service, Don worked at Monarch Range in Beaver Dam and later owned and operated Don's Bar in Beaver Dam. He also worked for the Post Office in Beaver Dam for several years until his retirement. On February 28, 1984 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Norenberg in Beaver Dam. Don loved ice fishing, hunting, playing pool in the pool league at his bar and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also active in youth baseball where he served as commissioner. Don was an avid Packer, Brewer and Cub fan. He was a member of John E. Miller American Legion Post #146 in Beaver Dam and a lifetime member of Clarence Keske V.F.W. Post 1163.
Don is survived by his wife Carolyn of Beaver Dam, children, Patricia (Troy) Loun of Yakima, WA, Susan (David) Van Dyke of Overland Park, KS, Fred Grignon of Beaver Dam, Brian Fischer of Beaver Dam, Jennifer (Brian) Sennhenn of Columbus, Linda (Justin) Johnson of Beaver Dam; grandchildren, Mark, Joseph, Andrew, Corey, Kelly, Eric, Joseph, Jeffrey, Hunter, Aiden, Alex, Avery, Landyn, 7 great-grandchildren; siblings, Delores Brost of Beaver Dam, Virgil (Mae) Smith of Beaver Dam and Ernie (Phyllis) Smith of Largo, Florida. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Barbara, his son Charles Smith on April 28, 2012 along with a brother and sister.
A Memorial Gathering for Don will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd in Beaver Dam. There will be no formal funeral service. John E. Miller American Legion Post #146 is invited for a walk through at 2:00 p.m.
