Obituary

Dorothe M. Holtz, age 94, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Clearview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Juneau.

Dorothe Marion (Darkow) Holtz was born on May 23, 1927 in Athens, WI, to Lillie (Gauerke) and Theodore Darkow. She attended the Athens public schools and graduated in 1945. After graduation, she was employed by Wes Pahl, Executive Manager of the Erbach Enterprises, as secretary. Dorothe moved to Wausau, WI and served as medical and personal secretary to Dr. Merritt L. Jones from 1947-1950.

In Sept. of 1950, she married Mainard C. Holtz in Wausau, WI. They moved to Ashland, WI, where Mainard spent five years as Dairy and Food Inspector for the Department of Agriculture for the State of Wisconsin, and also where daughters, Lynnel Ann and Marjean Sue were born.

In 1955, the family moved to Richland Center, WI, where Mainard was employed by the University of Wisconsin, as the extension agent of Richland County. This is where their third child, Randall was born.

Dorothe was employed by the Richland Hospital for fifteen years, first as a radiology transcriptionist and then heading the insurance department.

She was very active in the local Presbyterian church, serving as deacon, choir member, president of the U.P.W. and teaching Sunday School. Dorothe also served as leader of Girl Scout Troop 292 for ten years. After retirement, she delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at the local thrift shop.

The Holtz family vacations were spent at their cabin in Drummond, WI, part of the Richland Club. After retirement, they spent winters in Arizona and visiting her daughter and family in Idaho.

Dorothe enjoyed many hobbies, including knitting and sewing for the family, rosemaling, attending auctions and flea markets, as well as playing scrabble and working on crossword puzzles. Her passion was collecting cast iron trivets, of which she had over 500. She was quite a whistler and loved music and ballroom and square dancing.

Dorothe is survived by daughters, Lynn Sharkey of Beaver Dam, and Jeanne (Dean) Johnson of St. Maries, Idaho, and son, Randy (Terri) Holtz of Baraboo; four grandchildren, Kirk and Mark Johnson and Rachel and Benjamin Holtz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mainard C. Holtz; her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

A memorial gathering for Dorothe will be held at a later date and inurnment will take place at Westfield Cemetery in Loganville, WI.
