Obituary

Elsie T. Legac, age 89, a resident of Golden Living Center-Beaver Dam and formerly of 144 Vermont St. in Beaver Dam, unexpectedly returned to her home with the Lord on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.

Elsie was born on July 6, 1919, the daughter of Nicholas and Elisabeth (nee Koehler) May in Chicago, Illinois. She was a graduate of the class of 1937 at Calumet High School in Chicago. On September 5, 1942 she married Richard "Dutch" Tobbe in Chicago and they had one daughter Alice "Sue". He predeceased Elsie in July of 1945 at Camp Polk, LA. For many years, Elsie was the Treasurer of Three Links Auxiliary American Legion Post #361 in Chicago. She worked at Crackin' Good Cookies and Aaron Heating in Chicago. On May 18, 1957, she married Thomas Legac in Chicago and they had one daughter Clare. They lived for many years on the south side of Chicago and in suburban Blue Island. Tom and Elsie were members of the St. Vincent De Paul Society of St. Adrian Parish in Chicago. In 1987, they moved to Bath, Maine. Tom predeceased her on August 20, 1990. She came to reside with her daughter Alice "Sue" Nowak in Beaver Dam in 1997.

Elsie is survived by two daughters, Alice "Sue" (Joseph J.) Nowak of Beaver Dam, Clare (Russell) Shumaker of Bath, ME; 8 grandchildren, Joseph T. (fiancée Lisa Butterbrodt) Nowak, Therese (fiancée Joshua Draeger) Nowak both of Beaver Dam, Elizabeth "Beth" (Matthew) Nowak-Schaefer of Stevensville, MT, Mary Beth (Andrew) Shumaker-Doble of Fort Benning, GA, Russell Shumaker II, of Portland, ME, Amanda, Ruth and Karl Shumaker all of Bath, ME; 2 great-grandchildren, Henry Schaefer and Savannah Doble. She is further survived by a special cousin, Irene Azzarello, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Andrew (Alma) Legac and Marlene Legac both of Illinois, Louis Legac of California and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Matilda (Tom) Florian, Mildred (Mike) Corcoran, Clara (in infancy) and one brother Peter (Emily) May; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law George (Mary), John (Angela), Mike (Helen), Charles Legac and Elizabeth (Vic) Krzyzanski.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009 at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, (127 E. Maple Ave.) in Beaver Dam with Fr. John Schreiter as Celebrant. A memorial gathering will also be held on Friday, January 2, 2009 from 10:30a.m. until the time of Mass at the Church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Bath, Maine.
