Eugene "Gene" Schmidt, 74, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, January 21, 2008, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.
He was born March 4, 1933, in Beaver Dam, to Frederick W. and Esther (Kruschka) Schmidt. On June 1, 1957 he married his loving wife Jeanette (Nelson) in Beaver Dam. Their lives were blessed with two children. Gene was a career military man and served his country in the United States Air Force, where he received a Bronze Star. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked in Quality Control at Burgess-Norton, formally known as Advanced Products, in Beaver Dam. He was a member of First Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam, John E. Miller Legion Post 146, Juneau Rod & Gun Club, and Ducks Unlimited. Gene, who was very much an outdoors man, enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, and traveling. He had a great sense of humor and always looked forward to his morning coffee gathering at McDonald's where they all met to "solve the world's problems". Spending time with his family was very important to Gene, and he enjoyed traveling to see his grandchildren's sporting events. To say the least, Gene enjoyed life to the fullest and will be dearly missed.
Gene is survived by his wife, Jeanette Schmidt of Beaver Dam; two children, Becky (Mark) Kubale of West Bend and Bill (Jamie) Schmidt of Johnston, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Kyle and Kayla Schmidt. He is further survived by one sister, Marlene (Ronald) Wegener of Hayward, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Marvin and Les Schmidt; and one sister, Carol Schmidt.
