He was born the second of five boys to Hubert D. and Verna M. (Kraft) Dornfeld. He grew up in Salemville. Gary was very proud of his heritage and often told stories of growing up on the family farm. He graduated from Markesan High School in 1966. He then attended the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh where he met his wife Ann (Kramer) and they married in 1969. Their newlywed years were spent working while Gary completed his Master's Degree in counseling.
In September of 1974 he became a guidance counselor at Dodgeland High School in Juneau, WI where he worked his entire career. In addition to helping students determine next steps after high school and navigating teen-hood, he also touched many people's lives and forged lasting friendships.
Gary liked being in the driver's seat, whether it was taking motorcycle trips with friends and family, giving plane rides in his 1940's Ercoupe or giving the grandkids rides with the lawn tractor. He attended many fly-in breakfasts and looked forward to going to EAA every year.
Gary was a member of the Juneau Jaycees, the Juneau Lion's Club and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed floating down the Wisconsin River during the Jaycee Raft Races and helping to host the Fly-in breakfasts at the Dodge County Airport. He and Ann moved to Suamico, WI after they retired.
Gary leaves behind his wife Ann of 55 years, two daughters, Amy (Jeff) DeBroux of Appleton and Erica (Jesse) Land of Iron Mountain, MI; five grandchildren, Cora, Anna, Miles, Norah and Violet. He is also survived by his brothers Richard (Lois) Dornfeld, Michael Dornfeld, Steve (Linda) Dornfeld, sisters-in-law Paula (Mike) Riebe and Trudy Kramer. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Verna (Kraft) Dornfeld, brother and sister-in-law Dennis (Sheila) Dornfeld, in-laws Sue Dornfeld, Raymond and Margaret Kramer, Louise Severson, Richard Kramer, infant daughter Lisa Dornfeld.
The family would like to thank the care staff at Aspire and Moments Hospice for their compassion and kindness extended to both Gary and our family.
