Gilbert George Henslin, age 87 of Markesan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 9th, 2013 at his home at Samuel's Grove.
Gilbert was born on June 27, 1925 on the farm in rural Markesan to George and Olga (nee Zimmerman) Henslin. On November 3, 1954, he married the love of his life, Laverne Vande Zande, at Alto Reformed Church. They were gifted with four beautiful children, eight grand-children, three great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way!
Gib worked for 35 years at Speed Queen (Alliance) in Ripon, WI. He was also a part-time farmer. He was an avid sports fan; the Milwaukee Brewers, the Green Bay Packers and even the Chicago Cubs! Gib loved playing softball with his children and all the neighborhood kids. He also loved bowling. Gib was a lover of music! He played the accordion, sang in the Markesan Minstrel Show, and was a member of a Barbershop Quartet. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Markesan and sang in the Church Choir. He also loved flower and vegetable gardening; his gardens were "weedless"! Gib was also a lover of animals; he had a special bond with all his cats!
Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Laverne; children, Brent Henslin of Freedom, Susan (Charles) Hamer of Markesan, Keith (Patti) Henslin of Mound, MN and Gwen (Adrian) Ramirez of DePere; grandchildren, Bryan (fiancée Heather), Eric, Ben, Joshua, Matthew, Jared, Logan and Maya; great-grandchildren, Travis, Kylee and Wesley. He is also survived by many brother-in laws, sister-in laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and other relatives.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 65 W. Catherine Street, Markesan, with Pastor Jason Jobs officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at Phelps Cemetery, Town of Green Lake, Green Lake County.
A memorial has been established for Gilbert Henslin.
