Glenn Robert Dorn, age 95, of Beaver Dam, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.
Glenn was born on October 24, 1917 in Beaver Dam, the son of Robert and Myrtie (nee Brower) Dorn. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1935. Upon graduation, he worked at Weyenberg Shoe Factory until May, 1941when he entered the United States Army. As was custom of the time, all males ages 18-35, were to spend one year in the Armed Forces. As it turned out, with Japan bombing Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Glenn became a part of the U.S. fighting force of World War II. His early military experience found him being stationed at Scott Field Air Base in Illinois and at Souix Falls, South Dakota Radio Air Base. He was later deployed to Germany, where he spent the remainder of his military career. His family spent two years in Souix Falls and upon his discharge on January 26, 1946, they returned to Beaver Dam.
Glenn married Elaine E. McMillan on April 11, 1942 and together they had one daughter. Glenn and Elaine recently celebrated 71 years of marriage. He was a lifelong Eagle member and was very active from 1941 until present. From the time Glenn returned from serving his country, he and Elaine made Beaver Dam their home. He worked at Mercury Marine, Kiekhaefer in Beaver Dam from 1953-1965 and after that, at John Deere in Horicon, until his retirement in December, 1980. Due to ill health, he lived at Charleston House from November, 2007 until January, 2011. He was a resident at Hillside Manor from January, 2011 until his death.
Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Elaine Dorn of Beaver Dam; his daughter Beverly (Merlin) Gentz of Appleton; his grandson, Jeffrey (Ann) Gentz and their children, Rachel, Jonathan, Abigail, and Elizabeth, all of Neenah; his granddaughter, Jennifer (Cory) Torbenson and their children, Haidyn, Preston and Caitlin, all of Appleton. He is further survived by sister-in-laws, Katie (Tom) Soles of Fond du Lac, Violet McMillan of Beaver Dam, and Inez McMillan of Beaver Dam; brother-in-law Richard (Pat) McMillan of Beaver Dam, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Myrtie Dorn; his sister, Ruth (Marvin) Melcher; his brother, Earl (Betty) Dorn; his grandson, Jason Daniel Gentz; his sister-in-laws, Joyce and Lavita McMillan and Margie Quandt; his brother-in-laws, Malcolm, Eugene and Winston McMillan and Wilbur Quandt.
A Funeral Service for Glenn will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd. in Beaver Dam with Rev. Dennis Belter officiating. Visitation will also take place on Wednesday at Cornerstone from 12:00 p.m. (NOON) until the time of Service. Immediately following the service, burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens in the Town of Trenton with graveside Military Honors provided by John E. Miller American Legion Post # 146 and a luncheon will follow the burial back at Cornerstone.
