Gloria Wheeler, age 85 of Beaver Dam, entered into eternal life with family by her side on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
Friends and family are invited to gather on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd., Beaver Dam from 5:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Seth Dorn to officiate. Private family inurnment will take place at Oakwood Cemetery, Beaver Dam.
Gloria was born on Labor Day, September 5, 1932 in Beaver Dam, the middle daughter of the late Reynold and Meta (Weckwerd) Hansen, local mink ranchers. She graduated from Beaver Dam High School, Class of 1950 and then earned an executive secretarial degree from Prospect Hall in Milwaukee. She later earned a BBA degree from Marion University in 1995. While residing in Milwaukee, she was employed by Music by Muzak and Sylvania Electric. She returned to Beaver Dam to marry her husband, Robert L. Wheeler on October 23, 1954 at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church. Following their honeymoon, she was hired by President Patterson for a secretarial position at Wayland Academy. She was employed at Wayland for a total of 37 years, interrupted with a hiatus of 5 years by the birth of their son, Bryan L. Wheeler. Serving under the leadership of four presidents, Gloria chaired the school's 125 th Anniversary celebration. She was the recipient of the school's Alumni Achievement Award in 1996 as an honorary alumnus, Class of 1965. She retired in 1997 in an administrative position as Coordinator for Annual Programs and a member of the President's Council. Later she served on the committee selected to promote the school's Sesquicentennial celebration in 2005.
Gloria was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, where she also was a member of the Ladies Aid, having served as secretary. In years past, she was involved with United Way as a Residential Chairperson, the Women's Affiliate of the Chamber of Commerce, where she served as President, and a director of the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce for four years. She enjoyed fishing, especially her and her husband's yearly musky fishing trips to Hayward, playing bridge with local groups and other card games with relatives and friends, reading, traveling for leisure and business, and having lunch with classmates.
Gloria is survived by her son, Bryan L. Wheeler of Beaver Dam; sisters, Thea (Albert) Brandt of Lockport, NY and Kristine Kennedy of Madison; sisters-in-law, Elaine Wheeler of Beaver Dam and Kaye Janisch of Beaver Dam; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 62 years, Robert Wheeler; and brothers-in-law, Mally Dean Wheeler and James R. Kennedy.
