Obituary

Gordon Bush, age 98 of Markesan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Markesan Resident Home.

Gordon was born December 6, 1915 to Arthur Darius Bush and Violet Ione (Kidney) Bush in the township of Hampden in Columbia County, WI. He was the eldest of five sons. In the Spring of 1916 his parents bought a farm in the township of Marcellon, ten miles north of Portage. Gordon attended grade school at Marcellon Stone School and high school at Portage. After high school, Gordon got into the trucking business hauling can milk, produce for the local farmers and peas and sweet corn for the canning factories for seven years.

On October 14, 1939, Gordon married Arlene R. Owen and continued the trucking business until the Spring of 1942. He was then forced to drive a Badger Ordnance bus, hauling workers to and from the Badger Ordnance Ammunition Plant, south of Baraboo, WI until World War II ended in 1945. After the war was over, Gordon's trucking business was gone. He bought a small 60 acre farm west of Dalton. In 1946, he went through a very serious back operation and had to quit farming for the two years it took to recover. In March of 1950, Gordon and Arlene moved to the big 217 acre farm near Fairwater, WI. The old back problem returned, however, and they had to sell out in the Fall of 1956. In March of 1957, Gordon took a job as dairy plant fieldsman for Dairyland Co-op of Juneau, WI, which merged with Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI) in 1969. Gordon worked himself up to Director of the reload system in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Gordon retired on March 1, 1981 after 25 years of service. In 1959 on his birthday, Gordon moved into his present home in Markesan. Gordon wished he had been able to stay on his farm. The sand company owns the farm presently.

Gordon and Arlene had six children: Virginia "Ginny" (Gabe - deceased) Long of Romance, AK, Gale (Marti) of Cambridge, Randy (Kathy) of Oklahoma, Thomas (deceased at four days), Susan (Mike) Dornfeld of Cambria and Steven (Trudi) Fairwater. There are 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Arlene passed away on May 8, 1997 after 57-1/2 years of marriage. He then married Kathleen E. Mobley of Ontario, Canada on March 5, 2002.

Gordon hunted deer, antelope and elk in the West and fished in Ontario, Canada for about 25 years. He and his family enjoyed many years of travel and camping. Gordon had also been involved in the Senior Olympics since 1989, participating in bowling and shuffleboard. He has accumulated over 240 trophies and awards and qualified for the National Senior Olympics 14 times, participating five years at Tucson, AZ in 1997, Orlando, FL at Disney World in 1999, Norfolk, VA in 2003 and in Pittsburgh, PA in 2005. Gordon was indicted into the Wisconsin Senior Olympic Hall of Fame on September 3, 2002 by the Governor of Wisconsin at a ceremony in Milwaukee attended by approximately 200 people. Gordon qualified for the 2007 National Olympics in Louisville, KY for Wisconsin. There are typically 12,000 to 14, 000 people participating in about 20 different activities--lots of competition in all the sports. He had the honor of carrying the Wisconsin flag in front of 8,000 people in Louisville the night before the games started. Gordon had the honor of winning three gold and one bronze playing shuffleboard and bowling. He has qualified twice since 2007, but did not attend due to travel costs. He had many friends in the Senior Olympic organization and enjoyed the people and the sports.

Gordon has spent the past 28 winters at Bentsen Grove Trailer Park in Mission, TX where he enjoyed the warmer weather and many wonderful friends.

Gordon was an alderman for the City of Markesan for 12 years and served on the Board of Directors of Riverdale Manor Nursing Home for 10 years.

He had four brothers, Kenneth (deceased) and Charlotte (deceased); Russell (deceased) and Norma; Stanley (deceased) and Mary Lou, and Charles and Mary. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Thomas Owen, his wife Arlene, a daughter-in-law, Sharon (Randy), and brothers Kenneth, Russell and Stanley.

Gordon was very proud of his family and loved them all.
