Helen Ruth Katsma passed away Friday, March 27th, 2015 at Marvin's Manor, Waupun from complications due to Alzheimer's disease, she was 81.
Helen was born on April 17, 1933 to Harry and Etta (Slager) Swaagman in the Township of Randolph. She attended Randolph Christian Grade School in East Friesland and Randolph High School through 10th grade.
Helen married Cornelius Katsma on July 5th, 1951 at First Randolph Christian Reformed Church of East Friesland where Rev. Bernard Haan officiated the ceremony.
There are many things that Helen enjoyed doing in her life. She always enjoyed serving and helping others and that was demonstrated in her lifelong work as a nursing assistant. She worked at the Waupun Christian Home, LakeView Nursing Home, and Hillside Manner both in Beaver Dam and the Continental Manor of Randolph. She also worked in Dodge's Grocery store in Randolph.
Helen and her husband Cornelius "Cornie" Katsma attended and served in Second Randolph Christian Reformed Church for many years where Helen helped as a leader with the Calvinettes (G.E.M.S.). They are current members of MarshView Ministries where she helped welcome people, served as the custodian and helped in many areas of service to the congregation and served as "Grandma" to many. Helen was a great cook and liked baking brownies, breads and cookies. She liked to knit and crochet and made many afghans, tablecloths and baptismal blankets for the grandchildren. Helen also loved to walk and was often seen walking around Randolph.
Helen is survived by her husband Cornelius "Cornie" Katsma of Randolph, two daughters Loretta (Tom) Oft , Saxon, WI. Etta Kay, (Rob) Uzzle, Marshall, MI.; two sons Steven (Donna) Katsma, Randolph; David (Mari Lynne) Katsma, Juneau. Twelve grandchildren, Amy (Paul) Pucker, Tonia (Brandon) Nebl, Rebecca (Bill) Ciske, Justin Katsma, Melissa (Kevin) Bills, Noah (Mackenzie) Katsma, Chayah, (Eric) Wilbers, Chiyel (Michael) Gaffney, Adriyel, Michaiah and Nachalah Katsma, Brooke Uzzle including 11 great grandchildren and one step great grandson and spouse; one sister Edna (Jim) Fisher, Delray Beach FL; one brother Alfred "Dick" (Ruth) Swaagman; sister-in-laws Lucille Swaagman, Grace Homan, Barbara (Dirk) VIsser and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Etta Swaagman, brothers, Benny, Henry and Darvin and sisters Alice, Kathryn, Benty and brother-in-laws Clarence Katsma and George Minnema.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 1st from 6 to 8 pm at Cornerstone Funeral and Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd., Beaver Dam and Thursday April 2nd from 10 to 11 am at Living Hope Community Church in Fox Lake. The service will follow the visitation at 11 am. The Rev. Dr. Larry Meyer will be officiating the service. Memorials may be made to MarshView Ministries.
