Henry "Ed" Edward Butler Fairman, age 84 of Beaver Dam, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Charleston House Assisted Living and Memory Care.
Ed was born on November 27, 1937, to the late Henry "Butler" and Edith (Olsen) Fairman in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He married Rachel McNeilly on August 26, 1961, in Cleveland, OH and together they raised a family of four children. They divorced in 2000. Ed married his second wife, Christine, on June 21, 2014.
Ed graduated from Stivers High school in Dayton, OH; and Fenn College in Cleveland, OH. He worked for many companies and contractors in his career in Metallurgical Engineering and Project Management, including Pesco, Sundstrand, Rockwell International, Parker-Hannifin, Fernald Feed Materials/National Lead of Ohio (NLO), Westinghouse, and Copperheat/MQS Technologies. While at Pesco, he worked on the hydraulic pumps in the air speed brake systems of the STS space shuttle program.
Ed was a member, author, and contributor to the American Society of Metallurgists (ASM), and former Chair of the ASM Handbook Committee. He also served as adjunct faculty at Northern Kentucky University, teaching in engineering technology.
Ed was a faithful member of many congregations in the United Church of Christ in his lifetime. He served several congregations as a Licensed Minister; and shared his time and gifts with computers in the international ecumenical ministry S.A.R.A. (Sharing America's Resources Abroad), most notably at the Presbyterian Teacher's College in Rubate, Kenya. Ed was an avid model train collector and historian of American Rail, most notably contributing to the written history of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad.
Ed is survived by his wife, Christine; his children, Joanne (Thomas) Goodman of Bay City, MI; Susan (Ray) VanDeWalker of Portage, MI; Sally (Walter) Dannhardt of Roanoke, VA; and Henry "Hank" (Christina) Fairman of Freeport, IL; grandchildren, David, Michael, and Matthew Goodman; Megan (Andrew) Craig, Joseph, Eric, and Nicholas VanDeWalker; Maxwell, Mason, and Sarah Dannhardt; and Elliot Fairman; and great-grandchildren, Tobias, Elliott, and Jonathan Craig; his sister, Carolyn (Kenneth) Englert; brother, Jonathan (Rosemarie) Fairman and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents; and brothers, Thomas Fairman and Stephen Fairman.
Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will be holding a private memorial service at a later date.
