Obituary

Jane G. (Nilles) Serio, age 93 of Markesan was called to eternal life on Friday, August 11, 2017 surrounded by her family at the Markesan Resident Home.

Visitation for Jane will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Markesan from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Marcin Kordel as Celebrant. Burial will take place at Markesan Memorial Cemetery.

Jane was born on July 23, 1924 to Joseph and Helen (Hammon) Gensheimer in Chicago, IL, the oldest of two daughters. She attended St. Margaret Mary and St. Ida Catholic Grade Schools and graduated from St. Scholastic Catholic Women's High School in 1942. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary. In 1946, she married Robert Nilles in Chicago, IL, and together they had four sons. Widowed in 1950, she then married Andrew Serio in 1952, and together they had two daughters and a son. They raised their family in Park Ridge, IL until 1967 when they moved to Wisconsin. They lived in the White Sails Subdivision on the south shore of Green Lake. In 1970, Jane became employed as a cook at the Markesan High School until her retirement in 1981.

Besides being a busy homemaker raising seven children, Jane enjoyed bowling, swimming, Bridge and other card clubs. She was active in Homemakers and American Legion Auxiliary Post 282, serving on various committees and offices. She was also a faithful member of Holy Family Parish in Markesan and served in any capacity needed in the Council of Catholic Women. She and Andy were avid volunteers at the Ripon Thrift Store, Riverdale Manor and the Markesan Resident Home. Jane also enjoyed hobbies of sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting and crafts. Jane was always there for anyone that needed help, especially her family. She loved playing games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jane is survived by her seven children, Michael Nilles of Cross Plains, WI, Timothy (Carol) Nilles of Galena, IL, Donald (Janet) Nilles of Chicago, IL, Robert (Mary) Nilles of Middleton, Marianne (Craig) Frei of Markesan, Julia (Peter) Schweder of Minocqua, and Salvatore Serio of Madison; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; sister, Carol Bergey Porter; grandson, Raymond Nilles and other relatives.

If desired, memorials in Jane's name may be directed to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 282, 11 E. Charles St., Markesan or Father Carr's Place 2B , 1062 N. Koeller St., Oshkosh.

The family would like to thank the staff at Markesan Resident Home North Terrace, Dr. Ross Hazlewood and Care Wisconsin for the loving and compassionate care Jane received over the last nine years.
