Obituary

Whether he was your "Big Brother John" or your "Favorite Brother-in-Law" or your loving Grandpa John or your friend new or old, John was always ready with a helping hand and could light up a room with his one-liners.

John A. Schweiger passed away on January 1, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI. On September 27, 1947, he was born in Beaver Dam WI, the first of seven children, to Clarence and Laura (Thill) Schweiger.

He graduated from BDHS in 1965 and enlisted in the U.S. Army; he was  in Basic Training before he was 18 years old. After Advanced Individual Training, he shipped out to Vietnam and served as a Repair Parts Specialist from January 1966 thru January 1967. After he completed his service, he attended MATC Milwaukee for two years and then completed his accounting degree at UW Whitewater.

He began his career with 2 years at Smith & Gesteland. The remainder of his career was with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.

John was a Badger fan, especially of the men's and women's basketball teams, and served as Booster President. He enjoyed fly fishing and tying; he was an SWTU member, treasurer, and organizer of the organization's Special Annual Fishing Day. He donated by apheresis with the Red Cross for many years. He was accredited and taught many exercise classes. He teased himself about his amateur golf skills.

In 2003, both at age 55, John and Rose married—a great blessing for both (and to the delight of his Dad).

John is survived by his wife Rose, brothers and sister: Thomas, Paul (Jo Anne), and Alice Schweiger, "Little Brother" Bobby Glickman, brothers- and sisters-in-law: Bill Roder, Patricia and Chris Pawl, Frederick and Joan Budde, Loretta and Mark Bronson, Jane and Russ Lentz, Carol and John Morris, Barbara and Joseph Kachelski, Bill and Elisa Budde, Stepchildren: Ivan Garczynski and Rachel Egarczynski, and Emmanuel and Laura Garczynski, and grandchildren Penelope and Hugo Garczynski, as well as loved nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. He also left many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Laura, his sisters Ann Schweiger, Rita Tuel, and Jean Roder, sisters-in-law Vicki Lynn Schweiger, Nancy Schweiger, and Elizabeth Budde, brother-in-law Mark Tuel, and nephew Derek Bantz.
