John M. Keil, age 80, of Beaver Dam, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at his home after a good life. John was born February 14, 1932 in Beaver Dam the son of Marvin and Frances (nee Bayer) Keil. He graduated from Wayland Academy in 1950, attended Lawrence University and received a B.B.A school of commerce degree from U.W. - Madison in 1957. He spent two years from 1954-1956 in the U.S. Army serving 17 months in Germany.
On June 21, 1958 John entered holy marriage to Joanne M. Bartelt of Cambria, Wis. They were blessed with four children: Jay M. Keil (Debra), Jena F. Berg (Jeffrey), Jeffrey M. Keil (Arianna) and J. Matthew Keil. John was blessed a second time marrying Helen M. Kuenzi (nee Haider) on April 8, 1983. Helen had four children of her own: Kay M. Bartell, Michael D. Kuenzi (Michelle), Andrew F. Kuenzi and Steven C. Kuenzi (Heather).
John lived in Beaver Dam virtually all of his life.
Having a varied professional life including Y.M.C.A. Program Director; Commercial Banker; Real Estate Broker and Appraiser and Investment Broker. He was very active in sports throughout his life, particularly basketball and tennis, as a player, coach and official. He was involved in many different clubs, organizations, service groups and a lifetime member of First Ev. Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam.
A few career highlights: he officiated basketball for 56 years, especially enjoying teaching middle school kids on the court; he coached basketball and tennis at Wayland Academy and girls basketball at Beaver Dam High School; and was a charter member of Beaver Dam High School Athletic Hall of Fame. His favorite career athletic moments were participating in the Senior Olympics and any time he played tennis on his court with all of his Hillcrest Tennis Club teammates.
He is survived by his wife, Helen: his children, stepchildren and 12 grandchildren: Drew Bartell (Adri), Abby Bartell, Mitchell Berg, Nathan Berg, Matthew Berg, Peter Kuenzi, Kelly Kuenzi, Sophia Keil, Jacob Keil, Anthony Kuenzi, Zachary Keil and David Keil. Also his brother Ward Keil and family, other relatives and many friends.
Visitation for John will be on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Service, Inc., 135 Keller Blvd. in Beaver Dam and also on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at First Ev. Lutheran Church, 311 West Mackie St. in Beaver Dam. In a true tribute to John, his Funeral will start 10 minutes late at 11:10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at First Ev. Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Mark Molldrem officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral in the Fellowship Hall and burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery with graveside military honors provided by John E. Miller, American Legion Post #146
