Obituary

Lillian Mildred Long, age 92, of Tucson, AZ and formerly of Markesan, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 in Tucson, AZ.

Lillian was born February 11, 1921 in the Township of Ashford, Campbellsport, WI. She was the daughter of John E and Ruth (nee Schied) Hughes. She married Glenn A. Long on December 22, 1942 at the home of her parents in Deer Park, WI.

Lillian graduated from Princeton High School and Berlin County Normal. She did her practice teaching at Maplewood School and for several weeks at Markesan Kindergarten. She taught at Mackford School and then at Princeton State Graded School.

After marriage, Lillian and Glenn resided on the Long family farm. Both were members of the Markesan United Methodist Church. She returned to teaching in 1960 once all her children were in school. During this time she also completed work to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. She taught at the new Mackford School for 16 years before retiring with a total of 26 years in the classroom.

Lillian and Glenn retired to Hazelhurst, WI where they built their retirement home on Sunshine Lake. They then transferred their church membership to United Church of the Pines in Minocqua, WI. Beginning in 1987, they spent winters in the Southwest, especially California and Arizona.

Survivors include one son, Richard, of Tucson, AZ; four daughters, Barbara Berndt Schreiner, also of Tucson, AZ; Virginia Massey of Muskegon, MI; Marlene Polcyn of Dallas, OR; and Joanne (Daniel) Sherman of Wakefield, MA; six grandchildren, Craig, Keith and Kurt Massey, Kevin and Kristi Long, and Jailyn Meador; 6 great grandchildren, Kayla, Megan, Zachary Massey, Logan, Mickayla and Jaina Meador; 4 sisters, Alice Anderson, Helen (John) Hollerung, June Stephens and Phyllis Sandmann; two brothers, Charles (Jacie) Hughes and David (Jill) Hughes and a sister-in-law, Marti Herron. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, three son-in-laws, Irmin Schreiner, Rudy Berndt and Wallace Massey, her parents, two brothers, Victor and John, Jr., two sisters, Mary Buchholz and Erna Jacobsen and a special friend Harold Hillert.

A Funeral Service for Lillian will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Markesan United Methodist Church, 74 W. Catherine St., Markesan with Rev. Ethan Larson officiating. Visitation will take place prior to the service at church, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Lillian will be laid to rest at Mackford Union Cemetery, Town of Mackford Prairie, with her grandchildren serving as pall bearers.
