Mary E. Van Alstine, age 82, of Beaver Dam, died peacefully on Sunday, February 1, 2009 at Golden Living Center-Continental Manor in Randolph.
Mary was born on March 31, 1926 in White Plains, New York to Rev. Paul and Mary (nee Jordan) Alden.
On June 19, 1948 she was united in marriage to Robert Van Alstine in Franklin, Indiana. Mary was very active throughout her life and her hobbies included: gardening, cooking, reading, knitting, hiking, traveling, swimming, bird watching, camping, crochet and music. Her faith was always important to her and in her younger years she enjoyed singing in the church choir and solo singing. Most recently Mary was a member of
Union-Congregational Church in Waupun. Giving back was always something very important to Mary and she enjoyed her time working with Defenders of Wildlife and National Resources Foundation. In 1985, Mary was honored locally by the Daily Citizen as "Volunteer of the Year" for all of her volunteer community involvement. She was a loving wife and mother and will be deeply missed.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of over 60 years, Robert Van Alstine of Beaver Dam, her children, Frank (Amy) Van Alstine of Merrill, WI, Lynne Van Alstine of Beaver Dam, Roger Van Alstine of Madison, two sisters, Patricia Shrewsbury of Shoreview, MN, Alice Robinson of Phelps, New York and a sister-in-law Lucile Markel of Niles,MI. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, one son Bruce and her father and mother-in-law.
A Memorial Service for Mary will take place on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd. in Beaver Dam with Rev. Mark Arbisi officiating. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m.
