Michael T. Smith

Michael Thomas Smith passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026 after bravely fighting an aggressive form of cancer.

Michael was born April 6, 1955, the son of Robert and Deborah (Mahoney) Smith. On December 27, 1998 he married Therese Petty Sheldrake. Michael was athletic and adventurous in his youth. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years before spending 16 years working for the Department of Corrections. Michael adored his grandchildren who called him PopPop. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family. Michael was a kind, strong man who will be dearly missed by the many who loved him.

Michael is survived by his wife, Therese; his children, Kimberly Ware, Ryan (Gemma) Smith, and Joshua Smith; stepchildren, Christine (Andy) Beamer, Brooke (Miguel) Gonzalez, and Michael (Vanessa) Sheldrake; grandchildren, Azalea, Penelope, and William Smith, Vincent and Robert Ware, Christian and Baylee Beamer, Rockette Gonzalez, and Adam and Audrey Sheldrake; his siblings, Karen (William) Stine, Deborah Smith, Jennifer (John) Marriott, Christopher Smith, and Donna (Mark) Coen; and further survived by other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Smith; and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held on June 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona 2929 E Pinnacle Peak Rd, Phoenix. A Celebration of Life will follow the service.
