He was born February 13 1935 in Fond du Lac, WI, the son of Emil O and Esther (Anna) Krueger Horn. He graduated from Fond du Lac High School in 1953 and attended the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He later attended the University of South Carolina and obtained his Master of Mathematics degree in 1968.
Dick met his future wife Janice A Splitgaber, while both were in high school in Fond du Lac, and they were married in August of 1957. They began their life together in Menominee, Michigan where Dick was a Junior High Mathematics teacher and 9th grade basketball coach for one year. They then moved to Markesan where Dick taught High School Mathematics and coached basketball, baseball, and football on various levels until his retirement in 1995 after 37 years. His biggest thrill as a coach was in 1994 when as the JV coach and varsity assistant, the Markesan boys team made its first appearance at the State Basketball Tournament and won the Division 3 Championship.
Dick was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ripon, NEA-R, WEAC-R, and the American Battlefield Trust. After retirement Dick remained active in basketball by being a substitute scorer and timer, and following the boys and girls teams. He also sponsored a Mathematics Scholarship given to a graduating senior going into mathematics or a related field. He pursued his many hobbies--playing games on the computer, building World War
II model fighter planes, taping all the Star Trek episodes on the VCR, doing puzzles, and reading the many Star Trek novels, watching the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers on TV, and model railroading.
He also enjoyed golf during the summer and working out in the Wellness Center at Ripon Hospital. He and his wife Jan enjoyed traveling to Europe and to many of the Civil War battlefields. They also visited Branson several times a year.
He is survived by Jan, his wife of 65 years, daughter Kathleen (Robert) Wagener of Verona, son James Horn of Verona, two grandchildren, Kendall (Rich) Li of Verona, and Andrew (Courtney) Wagener of Green Bay, three great granddaughters, Hazel and Lettie Li and Aila Jean Wagener, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joyce and brother John.
A memorial fund has been established.
