Richard Smith

Richard “Rick” B. Smith, 71, of Waupun, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Waupun Memorial Hospital.

Rick was born October 14, 1951 in Brookfield, WI the son of Richard J. and Gloria Horn Smith. Rick was a graduate of Brookfield Central High School and following graduation enlisted in the Marine Corps and served for four years. Rick became a sergeant and served with Marine Helicopter Squardron I which were escorts for many dignitaries. When Rick was discharged from the Marines, he furthered his education and attended Waukesha County Technical College, receiving an associate’s degree. On February 26, 1977 Rick married Karen Rowell in Wauwatosa. The couple moved to Waupun where he was employed by Waupun Correctional Institution for 28 years and retired in 2005. Rick was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed going to Green Bay Packer games, being a season ticket holder for many years. He was a member of American Legion Post 449 of Brookfield.

Rick is survived by his son, Richard “Rick” W. (Brenda) Smith of Waupun; daughter, Tracy (Matt) Vellema of rural Waupun; grandchildren: Isaiah Smith and Blake and Ashlyn Vellema; fiance, Linda Borgwardt of Waupun and her children: Jenna Lynn Ebling, Jared Borgwardt, and Jordan Borgwardt, and her five grandchildren; brother, Robert (Julie) Smith of Bradenton, FL; sister, Karen Smith (Steve) of Brookfield.

Visitation and celebration of Rick’s life will take place Friday, May 26, 2023 at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun from 2-4 p.m. with military honors provided by American Legion Post 210 of Waupun.
