Robert Frank Van Alstine, age 88, of Beaver Dam, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, WI.
Robert was born on July 5, 1921 in Waukesha, WI, son of Frank and Elsie (nee Tanke) Van Alstine. Robert graduated from Kenosha High School and Kenosha Vocational School. He was employed at Snap-On Tools. He entered military service in 1942 and served in the field artillery, tank destroyers, and the 45th Evac. Hospital. He landed on Omaha Beach a few days after D-Day, and he earned five Battle Stars and the President's Unit Citation for being the first unit of its kind across the Rhine River. The unit was sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp to take care of inmates. He was stationed at Buchenwald when the war ended.
Upon returning to the states, he attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL. He married his wife Mary Alden in 1948 and together they had four children. He served a four year apprenticeship with the Ford Dealership in Kenosha to become a Journeyman Mechanic. He taught auto mechanics at the Reformatory in Green Bay and Fox Lake Correctional Prison. He also taught small engine repair before retiring in 1983. His hobbies included, camping, traveling and oil painting. Several of his oil paintings are currently on display in several museums. Robert was a member of Union Congregational Church in Waupun.
Robert is survived by his children, Roger of Madison, Frank (Amy) of Merrill and Lynne of Merrill; his sister Lucile Markel of Niles, MI and two sister-in-laws, Patricia Shrewsbury of Shoreview, MN and Alice Robinson of Phelps, NY. Robert is further survived by other relatives and many friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Mary on February 1, 2009, his son Bruce, and his parents.
A Memorial Service for Robert will be held on Monday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd. in Beaver Dam with Rev. Mark Arbisi officiating. Visitation will take place on Monday, August 10, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until the time of Service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
