Russel R. Salter

Russel Raymond Salter, age 81, was called to his Heavenly home July 9, 2026.

He was born Nov. 2, 1944 in West Bend, WI to Clark and Dorothy (Voigt) Salter. He was the youngest of 7 children - Kenneth, Francis, Harriett, Roland, Vivian and Glen. Russel grew up and lived most of his life in the Lamartine/Ladoga area and attended school in Brandon where he graduated from Brandon High School in 1962. He then attended Wausau Technical Institution and graduated in 1964. Russel next enrolled in the US Army and began his long life of service and devotion to others. After the military, Russel continued to serve as a devout member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). He was a persistent student of the teachings of the Bible and dutiful servant to the Lord. He spent his younger years teaching Sunday school and leading Bible studies. As he aged, he continued to serve in other ways such as ushering, general Church council membership and several years as Secretary for the Church council.

In addition to his service to the Church and love for the Bible, Russel also enjoyed tinkering with all types of gadgets, drafting architecture blueprints, gardening, landscaping, reading, sewing, music and most recently, model trains. Russel was also a passionate participant and advocate with the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI Fond du Lac). He benefitted immensely from the knowledge, compassion, support and community that the presence of this organization and the services and resources they provide. Russel was always kind, generous and unconditional with his time, energy and other resources that he had to offer to help out. Heaven will be happy to have him back home again. In the meantime, he will be missed here on Earth.

Russel is survived by his sister, Vivian Reimer; brother, Glen Salter; sisters-in-law, Mary Salter and Ann Salter, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; foster parents, Stanley and Lily Laing; brothers, Kenneth, and Francis; sister, Harriet (Lance) Bauer; brother, Roland; brother-in-law, Richard Reimer; and nephews, Scott Salter and Michael Reimer.

A graveside service for Russel will be held in September (date to be determined) at the Kekoskee Cemetery, 32 County Highway Y, Mayville, WI, 53050.

A memorial will be accepted in his name at the Church of Our Saviour Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac, or at NAMI Fond du Lac in his name.
