Thomas Anthony Benish passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital on Thursday, February 26, 2026. He was 68.
Tom was born on August 17, 1957, in Madison to Dr. George and Caryl (Kennedy) Benish. He grew up in a loving household rooted in learning, service, and compassion, values that shaped his life. He graduated from Campion High School in May of 1975.
For 22 years, Tom served with dedication and integrity at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. His work reflected his steady character and his belief in fairness, responsibility, and second chances.
In January 1995, Tom married the love of his life, Lisa (Krinke). Their son, Albert Lee Benish, was born on February 5, 1996, bringing immeasurable joy and pride to Tom’s life. He was a devoted husband and a deeply caring father, always ready with a gentle word, quiet humor, or thoughtful guidance.
Tom found peace and wonder in simple, meaningful things. He was an avid reader and loved watching nature documentaries, often sharing fascinating facts and observations with those around him. He gave generously of his time, helping at local peer-support communities including Alcoholics Anonymous and other addiction recovery groups, where his compassion and understanding made a difference in many lives. In a final act of generosity, Tom chose to be an organ donor, offering hope and healing to others.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Lisa; his son, Albert (Andrew Schaick) of Oshkosh, WI; his brother Robert (Carol) Benish of Tucson, AZ; his sister Susan (Bill) Santner II of Middleton, WI; and his brother David (Judy) Benish of Westport, WI. He is also lovingly remembered by his nephews, William (Stacy Harnett) Santner III of Middleton, WI, and Patrick (Natalie) Benish of Waunakee, WI; two great-nephews; sister-in-law Diana Krinke; and many dear cousins, including Beth Kennedy of Madison, WI; Barbara (Doug) Kennedy of Waterbury Center, VT; Tom Kennedy of Florida; Laurie Tormey Hasbrook (Sam Guardino) of Chicago, IL; Julie Hasbrook (Joe) Reuteman of Oconomowoc, WI; and Steve (Kristin) Hasbrook of Milwaukee, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George and Caryl Benish; his older brother, George William Benish; and his brother-in-law, Dale Krinke.
Tom will be remembered for his quiet kindness, his thoughtful spirit, and the steady love he gave to his family and community. His life was one of service, humility, and care for others, and his memory will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
In honoring Tom's wishes, private family services will be held.
