On September 16, 1961 he was united in marriage to Sharon Bender at St. John's Lutheran Church in Salemville. A lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kingston where he was baptized and confirmed, Verlyn taught Sunday School for more than 50 years and also served on the church council. He was also on the Board of Directors for the South Central Mutual Insurance Company for 41 years. He loved being on the go and was known for being very social and spontaneous. Verlyn had a great sense of humor, was super patient, and very caring. Playing cards and games with his grandchildren kept his competitive spirit always wanting to play more. He often could be found teasing and playing jokes on his friends and family. When he had the time, he also enjoyed traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Jean Bender, nephew David Bender and other relatives.
