Obituary

Verlys Adelle Marquardt, age 82 of Markesan, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Barrett House in Markesan.

A funeral service for Verlys will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Markesan United Methodist Church, 74 E Catherine St., Markesan from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kyochul Shin officiating. Burial will take place at Salemville Cemetery, town of Manchester.

Verlys was born on December 27, 1940, in Fond du Lac to Elery and Edith (Lenz) Marquardt. Verlys was baptized by Rev. Wandrey and confirmed in the Zion Evangelical United Brethern Church in Markesan- now Markesan United Methodist Church, where she was a lifetime member. Verlys graduated from Markesan High School in 1958. The seniors took a greyhound bus trip to Washington D.C. and New York City- and this was the start of her traveling the United States. Verlys worked in the Markesan canning factory- in the can car for two summers. She worked at Ripon Foods/Bremner Cookie Factory for 46 years, where she made many good friends.

Verlys enjoyed reading, polka dancing, country music shows, and getting autographs and her picture with many country singers, going to the Grand Ole Opry-many times, garage sales, traveling the United States, and taking many pictures. She traveled through all 50 states and made it to Hawaii in 1962, her favorite state. Verlys drove the Alaska Highway with four friends in 1971 when it was still gravel. Verlys traveled every year from 1962-2017, enjoying all of the United States. Verlys was a great collector of many things including dolls, paper dolls, stamps, collector buttons, pins, pennants, and Dick & Jane school books. She was a huge Elvis Presley fan and was able to meet him twice. Verlys lived such a wonderful life and a wonderful family, relation, friends, and neighbors.

Verlys is survived by her brother, Jon (Ann) Marquardt; and further survived by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elery and Edith Marquardt, and other relatives.
