Vernon "Vern" Cornwell, age 88 of Markesan, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Markesan Resident Home.

Visitation for Vern will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 65 W. Catherine St., Markesan from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Jason Jobs officiating. Burial will take place at Markesan Memorial Cemetery.

Vern was born on May 6, 1933 in Westboro, WI, the son of Earl and Meta (Dutzle) Cornwell. He attended several country schools, including Larkin School near Prentice and Meadow Creek School near Kennan. He was united in marriage to Avis Laper on April 3, 1954 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Markesan. Vern worked as a farmhand for five years and then started working at Markesan Lumberyard, where he was employed for 42 years as a truck driver when he retired. In his later years, he also worked as a school crossing guard. He was active in his church, played in the dartball league, and also bowled for many years on the men's and couples' leagues.

Vern is survived by his wife, Avis Cornwell of Markesan; daughter, Sandra McCulley of Markesan; grandchildren, Rebecca (Dan) Bush and Jacob McCulley; great-granddaughter, Leah Bush; sisters, Gladys, Lois and Phyllis; brothers, Leland and Herbert; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Alan Cornwell in infancy; five sisters; three brothers; and other relatives.
