Virgil L. Wollenburg, age 87 of Beaver Dam, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.
Virgil was born on May 23, 1925 in Beaver Dam to Frank and Elsie (nee Jeche) Wollenburg. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1943 and was immediately drafted to the United States Navy during World War II. Virgil was assigned to the Pacific Fleet following Pearl Harbor on the destroyer USS Wilson. They island hopped from Tarawa, Philippines and Okinawa and Virgil survived a kamikaze attack on April 16, 1945 aboard the USS Wilson. Upon his return he worked for many years for JCPenny Co. and later as a store manager. He was first united in marriage to Idabel Ring and she passed away at the age of 36. He later married Lorraine Krebs who also preceded him in death. Earlier in his life, Virgil enjoyed fishing, golfing and camping. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
Virgil is survived by his children, Craig (Sandy Wurgler) Wollenburg of North Dakota, Leah (John) Gutekunst of North Carolina, Lana (Todd) Syverson of Alaska; grandchildren, Jenna, Chet,Tate; step-children, Orie (Ron) Williams of North Dakota, Dale Krebs of Wisconsin, Bill (Sandy) Krebs of Wisconsin; step-grandchildren, Perry, Chad, Brad, Uriah, Tyra, Lori, Debbie and 11 step-great-grandchildren. Virgil is further survived by his loving companion, Edna Heinemeier of Beaver Dam and her family, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, his wives Idabel and Lorraine and other relatives.
A Funeral Service for Virgil will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 135 Keller Blvd. in Beaver Dam with Rev. Mark Jensen officiating. Visitation will also take place on Wednesday at Cornerstone from NOON until the time of Service. Burial will take place at Pardeeville Cemetery with military honors.
