IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter A.
Ross
November 13, 1928 – June 3, 2021
Walter "Wally" Arnold Ross, Jr., age 92 of Manchester, WI, was unexpectedly called to his heavenly home on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Ripon Memorial Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
Wally was born on November 13, 1928, to Walter Ludwig and Alvina Tillena (Krenz) Ross, Sr. Born in Milwaukee, WI, he was baptized at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church and lived in Milwaukee until 1935, when his family purchased the gas station and car repair shop on the corner of Main Street in Manchester, and Ross Motors was established. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Manchester and graduated from Markesan High School in 1947, where he enjoyed archery, was the marching band drum major, and loved driving around in convertible cars with his friends.
On June 20, 1954, Wally married the love of his life Ardell "Dell" Mary Radtke, who lived on the other corner of the same Main Street block in Manchester, above Radtke's General Store, her family's business. He and Dell went on to have three children, Gregg, Dawn and David, and made their home on Highway 73 just North of Manchester.
Like his father, Wally had a lifelong career as a mechanic, continuing Ross Motors when his father passed away in 1970. Mechanical talents continue in his two sons and his grandchildren. He took pride in keeping his customers on the road and keeping classic cars nicely painted. When not working on cars, he used his artistic skills as an avid wreath maker for all occasions, but with a special love of making outdoor Christmas decorations for many places in Manchester. Wally mowed many lawns and plowed many driveways over the years, maintained the grounds of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for several decades, and was a Fire Warden for almost 40 years. He loved; collecting and fixing up antiques, attending car shows, flag poles, airplanes, going for a Sunday drive, many kinds of music, many kinds of food, a nip of scotch at the end of the day, and most of all, spending time with family. A devoted lifelong member of St. Paul's, he proudly tolled the bell when members passed for several decades, and now the bell has been tolled for him.
Wally is survived by his wife of almost 67 years, his beloved Dell; two sons; Gregg (Shari) Ross of Markesan, WI and David Ross of Manchester; one daughter; Dawn (Allan) Neuman of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; three grandchildren; Rachel Ross of Fort Collins, CO, Rex Ross of Markesan and Caitlin Neuman (Josh Fangman) of Madison, WI; and one sister-in-law, Sandra Driver of Manchester. He is further survived by many dear cousins, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, 12 uncles, eight aunts and many dear cousins.
Funeral services for Wally will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Manchester, with the Rev. Michael Plagenz officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow the service at the Manchester Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at the church.
Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St., Markesan, is honored to be serving the family.
