Walter "Wally" J. Diefenbach, age 91 of Beaver Dam, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Sylvan Crossings in Beaver Dam.
Wally was born on December 7, 1920 in the Town of Westford to Edwin and Rose (nee Spiel) Diefenbach. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School and joined the United States Navy in 1942 and served as an Aviation Metalsmith in Portsmouth, VA. He then returned to Beaver Dam and was employed by the Malleable Iron Range Co. as a sales engineer until his retirement. On December 27, 1941 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Landaal of Waupun and together they had three sons. They were avid golfers and Wally once won the club championship at Beaver Dam Country Club and even got a hole-in-one during his life. He golfed right up till the end, even enjoying this year's early spring. Wally and Phyllis also enjoyed camping. Wally crafted three kayaks that he and his young family would take on the many rivers and lakes in Wisconsin during their camping adventures. Phyllis preceded Wally in death in 1977 and he later married Alvina Hans in August of 1987. She also preceded him in death in 2006. Wally was a member of American Legion John E. Miller Post #146, Beaver Dam Country Club and Beaver Dam Elks Club-Lodge 1540. He was much loved and will be deeply missed.
Wally is survived by his sons; John (Maria) Diefenbach of Florida, Michael (Sandy) Diefenbach and David (Diane) Diefenbach, both of Beaver Dam; three grandchildren, Eric Diefenbach of Florida, Danielle and Devan Diefenbach, of Beaver Dam; 2 great-grandchildren, Mason and Mia Diefenbach of Florida, a sister, Evelyn Klas of Beaver Dam and a sister-in-law, Joyce Foss of Beloit, WI. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.
A Funeral Service for Wally will be held on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Service, 135 Keller Blvd in Beaver Dam. Visitation will also be held on Monday at Cornerstone beginning at 11:30 a.m. until the time of Service at 1:00 p.m. and American Legion John E. Miller Post #146 is invited for a walk through at NOON. Burial will take place at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Beaver Dam with military honors and a luncheon will then follow at Cornerstone.
