William “Bill” J. Schmidt, 82, of Fox Lake, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. On July 5, 2025 God needed a Farmer, so he called Bill to his heavenly home. Bill was born on December 20, 1942, to Lester and Marjory (Lidtke) Schmidt. He was a 1961 graduate of Fox Lake High School. He was raised in a loving Christian home and a life-long member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fox Lake where he was an usher and Sunday school teacher along with being on many boards.
Bill’s cousin set him up on a blind date and it was love at first sight. December 30, 1967, Bill was united in marriage to Karen Schwandt at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Manchester. They were blessed to raise their three children on the family farm. He was a farmer at heart and followed in his dad’s footsteps to take over the Schmidt Dairy Farm. For several years, three generations milked the cows and worked the land. In his spare time, he enjoyed wood crafts that adorned their front yard or mailbox signs he changed every month. He spelled words in a cob of corn and gifted them to others. Every summer he looked forward to his family Door County vacation along with the Dodge County Fair. Bill was actively involved in the Trenton Highlights 4-H club and a dedicated Dodge County leader for 57 years. He had a kind heart and shared his generosity with others by donating 13 gallons of blood.
He was forced to retire after suffering a stroke but was able to celebrate the Schmidt Dairy Farm becoming a Century Farm. Although it was harder for him to get around, he still managed to mow the lawn and cruise around town. After his wife passed, he upgraded to a red scooter. Followed by another stroke, he spent the last seven years at Home Again and made the best of each day participating in all the activities. His kids and grandkids also kept him active and involved because that was his lifestyle. Family was very dear to Bill and he will always be remembered as a loving dad and grandpa.
Bill is survived and celebrated by his children, Brian Schmidt, Krista (Thomas) Klas and Kendra Schmidt (Michael C. Rasmussen); his three grandsons, Grant (fiancé, Bethany Schneekloth), Trent and Bryce Klas; his brother, James (Karn) Schmidt; along with an abundance of family and friends.
Bill was greeted in heaven by his parents, his wife Karen, and his in-laws Albert and Anita Schwandt.
He was a shining light to all who knew him. His journey was one marked by love, kindness and unwavering faith. Bill faced his challenges with honor, dignity and pride~ never once did he complain or question why me~ valuable lessons that his family and friends will cherish and carry with them. His kind soul and warm smile will be forever etched in their hearts.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Home Again Assisted Living in Columbus and St. Mary’s team for their compassion and care in Bill’s final chapter.
God made a Farmer and that was Bill. As he would always say, “God Bless”.
