[highlight_text] (1930 – 2013) [/highlight_text] Melvin DeVries, 83, of Waupun, died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Waupun Memorial Hospital.


[leftcolumn]Mel was born October 19, 1930 in the town of Alto the son of Geram and Martha Medema DeVries. Mel attended Waupun schools, graduating in 1949. On April 9, 1952 he married Janet Redeker in Waupun. Following their marriage the couple resided in Waupun all their married lives. Mel was employed at Gysbers Super Market for 34 years in the meat department. He was in sales for the Action Shopper for 12 years and Advertising Specialties on a part-time basis for about 20 years. He was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Waupun where he served as both a deacon and elder and also taught Sunday School. Mel was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He and Janet enjoyed winter months in Gulf Shores, AL.

Mel is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet; a daughter, Debra (Richard) Ritzema of Waupun; two grandsons, Matthew Ryan DeVries and Bradley James Ritzema; a great-granddaughter, Tianna Loomans; a brother, Ken (Evelyn) DeVries; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Larry (Ruth) Redeker of Hartford and Eileen Vant Hoff of Waupun; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, John, Ted and George DeVries.

[rightcolumn] [highlight_text] Visitation: [/highlight_text] Friends and relatives of Mel DeVries may call on the family on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun and on Tuesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

[rightcolumn] [highlight_text] Services: [/highlight_text] Funeral services for Mel DeVries will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Waupun with Rev. Jeff Brower officiating.

[rightcolumn] [highlight_text] Burial: [/highlight_text] Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in the town of Trenton.

    I would like to have the whole family of Mel know how sorry I am to learn of his death. I found Mel to be a hard working gentleman. You all can rest assured that Mel was very much respected by his peers and associates. I am sorry for your loss. I am sorry that I can’t be with you to give you this message first hand.
